Tips I Use To Fight Off The Common Cold Naturally

For whatever reason, and I'm sure you have noticed, there have been quite a few people sick this winter.  There are a variety of factors that cause this, but none the less it is the case.  I had a number of patient's ask me lately what they can do to help fight off their cold a little faster. As a result, I decided to let you know some of the things I do to shorter the duration of the symptoms, or even stopping them from taking hold all together.  As with starting any new remedy, be sure and consult your doctor to ensure they are safe for you.

Watch Your Lifestyle

What is better than fighting off a cold, is not getting it in the first place.  In many cases, the reason you got sick was that your body and immune system became run down and weak.  This can happen from eating too much sugar, being stressed, not getting enough rest, and too little exercise, just to name a few.  Be proactive, take care of your health.

Sweat It Out

Raising your body temperature to fight off the virus can be a very effective treatment.  A good method is to spend 15-30 minutes (or whatever you can handle safely) in a sauna. Repeat this daily (if possible) until the symptoms subside.

Try Holistic Remedies

There are many to choose from, but any or all of them can have significant benefits.  These include apple cider vinegar, honey, zinc (Zicam), oregano oil, hydrogen peroxide in the ears, cold wet socks at night, or even an onion placed on the bottom of your feet overnight. I know, those last two sound a bit far off, but I have found them all to be effective at certain times.

Increase Vitamin C and D

Vitamin C as well as D should be two of the vitamins that you take on a regular basis.  During times of sickness, increasing them slightly (particularly vitamin C) can be helpful to help support normal immune system function.  You should also be sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamin C.  This is ultimately the most effective way for your body to absorb and use the vitamin.

Flush It Out

Drinking plenty of water to help flush the virus out of your system is very important.  One other way to flush out the virus, particularly in your sinus's, is to use a Neti Pot.  It can be intimidating to use at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze.  When you have a cold, regular salt water cleanses from a Neti Pot help keep nasal passages clear and will help you breathe better and feel better.

Finally, there is no ONE magic cure for the cold or flu, but there are things you can do to always make your body a little stronger and healthier.  Of course, regular chiropractic check-ups are part of this regime, but instituting a few of the ones I mentioned above might just help kick whatever sickness you have, and put you back on the path to...

LIVE well.  BE well.
