As the kids head back to school in the coming weeks, it is imperative that kids and parents alike take steps to get their immune systems in tip top shape.  The more people and things we are exposed to, the more our immune system gets tested.  It is predominantly the strength of our immune system that determines whether or not we get sick, and not just "bad luck" from coming in contact with a certain type of bacteria or virus.  Therefore, your health is in your hands!

Lets take a look at 5 ideas that can help all of us boost our immune system function.

1.  Daily Fruits/Vegetables:

Eating a healthy diet is an importing starting point when it comes to your immune system. Reduce your consumption of processed and sugary foods, and replace them with plenty of daily fruits and vegetables. Shoot for at least 5 cups combined per day.  This will help feed your immune system with the necessary nutrients to remain healthy.

2.  Supplement with Vitamins:

Although supplementing with vitamins doesn't take the place of a healthy diet, many times it can be necessary. This is especially true when it comes to both vitamin C and D.  Both of those play a strong role in supporting immune system health. Consult your doctor prior to taking any supplement, but as an adult look to take at least 1000mg of vitamin C per day (preferably liposomal vitamin C), and 5000 IU of vitamin D.

3. Get Plenty of Rest:

Sleep is absolutely vital to immune system function.  7-9 hours of quality sleep every night helps your system repair, rejuvenate, and fight off invading organisms from taking over.  Get into a good routine of going to bed and waking up on a regular routine time for the most restful sleep.

4. Exercise:

Whether you are an adult or child, regular exercise is extremely important to your immune system health. Regular exercise has shown to help antibodies and white blood cells move through your blood stream quicker, helping detect and fight off invading pathogens before they take over.  Find what exercise you enjoy, and be sure to get at least 30 minutes of it in every day.

5.  Keep Your Nervous System Healthy:

Your immune system and nervous system are interlinked together to keep your body healthy and functioning normally.  Keeping your nervous system free of interference via regular chiropractic check-ups will help your immune system function at it's highest potential.  This is not only important for adults, but also very true for children. Get them checked regularly and adjusted at the chiropractor.

Finally, as with many things, it takes effort on many fronts to get and stay healthy.  There is no destination to be reached, but only constant and continuous effort to keep our health at the highest level possible. Get your kids used to good, healthy habits at an early age.  Not only will this keep them exceptionally healthy throughout their school life, but it will help them when they get older to...

LIVE well. BE well.
