Adjusting To Pregnancy

Over the years I have seen a lot of pregnant patients.  Some of them for the duration of their pregnancy, and some only towards the end when they are having considerable difficulty.  Regardless, every woman has the goal of having a healthy and safe pregnancy, free of any excess discomfort.  The ultimate reward being a delivery free of complications, and the birth of a healthy child.

How Can Chiropractic Help With Pregnancy?

A study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) noted that between 50% and 80% of pregnant women suffer from low back pain during their pregnancy. They noted that a review of previous work showed that from 68% to 85% of pregnant women with back pain during pregnancy do not look for any care for their lower back pain. Why is that?  Generally it is believed that most women believe back pain is just a "normal" part of pregnancy.

Yes, as pregnancy progresses and your body continues to change, you can be more susceptible to developing lower back problems.  Regular chiropractic care helps provide structural balance and stability for the mother, resulting in a more comfortable pregnancy.

Prevention Is The Key.

If you are building a house is it smart to start with a strong foundation?  Of course.  This is what we teach patients who are either just pregnant, or thinking about becoming pregnant.  One important way to help reduce significant pain during pregnancy is to have a strong and healthy spine going into it.  A strong spine can handle a lot more stress than a weak one.  This along with staying regular with your visits for the duration of your pregnancy can be the difference between happiness and misery.

Finally, setting a strong foundation can have more long standing benefits than just less back pain. Chiropractic care during pregnancy can help to create a healthier and more comfortable in-utero environment for the newborn, helping them to get a better start to life. In fact, research suggests that there is a strong link between the baby’s experience in the in-utero environment and his or her lifelong health potential.  Ultimately, I believe that is what every mother hopes for their child.

That is how regular chiropractic care can help both mom and baby...

LIVE well.  BE well.
