Behind The Scenes: How Athletes Look For An Edge

This past Sunday over 114 billion people watched as the Denver Broncos upset the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50. Obviously this was the culmination of months and months of hard work for both franchises.  What many people don't realize is what goes on behind the scenes to keep these players healthy in such a violent sport.

Obviously a team of doctors and therapists are needed to get and keep players healthy. Here is an interesting fact: All 32 NFL teams include the professional services of a chiropractor as part of their health care team.  The first to do so was the New England Patriots, one the best teams in the league the last 15+ years. Dr. Michael Miller has served as the team chiropractor for the past 30 years.  He routinely will see 30-40 Patriot players before the game, and is also available for problems that arise during the game. Over his time with the Patriots, he has gotten a huge advocate in Tom Brady, who was quoted as saying "...as long as I see the chiropractor, I feel like I am one step ahead of the game."

From golf to soccer, to basketball and running, the vast majority of professional athletes are under regular chiropractic care.  This not only helps with injuries, but also helps maximize athletic performance.  Pictured here is TJ Hornberger, an elite level distance runner at Syracuse University.  They recently won the Division 1 Cross Country National Championship.  TJ has been under regular chiropractic care at the office since he was a young teenager in order to maximize his running talent and reduce the frequency and severity of injuries.  He did just that, and won the state championship his senior year of high school, and now continues that excellence at Syracuse.  Some of the other ways chiropractic care can help athletes include:

  • Improved strength and power.
  • Improved speed and reaction time.
  • Improved balance and coordination
  • Improved lung capacity and function.
  • Higher level of energy

Whether you are involved in recreational sports, or are participating at an elite level like TJ, it is vitally important for your health that your spine and nervous system be regularly checked.  If you are a coach always looking for an edge over other teams, chiropractic care for your athletes may be just what you have been missing. Famous Olympic Decathlete, Dan O'Brien said "..if I could put a percentage on it, I would say I compete 8-10% better under chiropractic care."  Let me put this in perspective. Usain Bolt currently holds the world record for the 100 meter dash in 9.58 seconds.  If you were to add 10% to his time it is the equivalent of almost an entire second.  Not only would that put him from first to last place, but he wouldn't even qualify with that time to be in the race.  In the world of athletics, an 8-10% improvement is ENORMOUS! Lastly, as a parent, what more can you ask of your child but to give their best effort. Chiropractic care will help you excel at whatever level of competition you are at.

LIVE well. BE well.
